Positive Temperature Coefficient Resistor Applications

A positive temperature coefficient resistor ptcr is a resistor that varies its resistance with its temperature. Unlike the ntc types these ptc thermistors have a currentvoltage characteristic that exhibits a change in direction and two basic types are used both depending on compounds of barium lead and strontium titanates ceramic materials.

Positive temperature coefficient ptc thermistors are a more recent development used mainly for protection circuits for sensing temperature or current.

Ptc Thermistors Vs Ntc Thermistors For Inrush Current

Positive temperature coefficient resistor applications. Figure 1 shows a ptcr wired in a circuit. Thus the thermistor is a semiconductor device which possesses high negative temperature coefficient about 004 per 0 c at room temperature of 25 0 c. The tcr is calculated as the average slope of the resistance value over this interval.

It is essential to check that the correct type is selected for any given circuit to ensure that its characteristic meets the requirements. Ptc thermistors are divided into two groups based on the materials used their structure and the manufacturing process. This is accurate for linear relations since the tcr is constant at every temperature.

They may exhibit a negative temperature coefficient at temperatures above 150 0c. So the ptcr is technically a thermistor. A resistor that changes resistance as a function of its temperature is also referred to as a thermistor.

Thermistors increase their resistance when temperature increases thus resulting in a positive temperature coefficient. Ptc thermistors are resistors with a positive temperature coefficient which means that the resistance increases with increasing temperature. Generally normal resistors are prepared using alloys and resistors that has temperature coefficient nearer to zero so they do not change their value more by the change in temperature.

Silistors have a linear resistance temperature characteristic with a slope that is relatively small through most of their operational range. The second group is the switching type ptc thermistor. If is positive the resistance increases with increasing temperature and the device is called a positive temperature coefficient ptc thermistor or posistor.

They are used in resistance thermometers and other temperature controlled applications. A resistor that changes its resistance characteristics as a function of its temperature is also called a thermistor. If is negative the resistance decreases with increasing temperature and the device is called a negative temperature coefficient ntc thermistor.

The temperature coefficient of resistance for a resistor is determined by measuring the resistances values over an appropriate temperature range. But if the device possesses positive temperature coefficient then the resistance of the device increases with the increase in temperature. Positive temperature coefficient ptc thermistors are used in many electronic circuits and for a variety of functions.

However there are special application devices manufactured that can switch as low as 00c or as high as 2000c.
